Claude Moraes MEP addresses a Special Conference of the EUMC in Vienna

Claude Moraes addressed representatives from other EU institutions, EU member states, non-governmental organisations and other specialised bodies on the role of the European Parliament in combating racism and xenophobia and promoting fundamental rights. On the same day he briefed London-based officers of the NCVO on lobbying Europe on issues such as the environment, development and disability during the upcoming UK Presidency of the EU.

Claude Moraes MEP addresses high-level Integration Conference in The Hague organised by the Dutch EU Presidency.

Claude Moraes MEP gave a keynote address to a high level Confernce in The Hague alongside Vladimir Spidla, the new Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities and the new Home Affairs Minister of the Netherlands as well as key European NGOs and the European Commission. The conference looked at the issue which is at the top of the Netherlands and EU political agendas.

This year's European Week for Safety and Health at Work (18-22 October) will focus on the construction industry. The construction industry has well over 12 million employees in the European Union and it also has one of the worst occupational safety and health records. A record that costs business and tax payers over 50 billion a year, not to mention the suffering of injured workers.

Report on Structural Funds calls for Urgent Reforms

Rapporteur for the Employment and Social Affairs Committee on the 13th Annual Report on Structural Funds, Claude Moraes MEP, called for urgent improvements to the way Structural Funds including ESF and EQUAL are allocated and applied for. In his report for the Committee he called for the European Commission to cut the bureaucracy around the funds, to improve their response to smaller NGOs and voluntary groups who apply for funding and to simplify the application procedure.

The report was voted for unanimously by the Committee in February 2003, (Opinion of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee, COM (2002) 591)
