The European Parliamentary Labour
Party
19 of the 78
UK MEPs are Labour and they form the European Parliamentary Labour Party
(EPLP).
MEPs sit in
Parliament as part of Europe-wide political groups, rather than in national
delegations. Labour MEPs therefore sit
with other European Socialists and Social Democrats forming the multi-national
socialist group, the Party of European Socialists (PES). 200 of the 732 MEPs are members of the PES
making it is the second largest group in the European Parliament after the
European People?s Party and European Democrats (EPP-ED).
Whilst the
EPLP sits as part of the PES in the European Parliament, it has its own
leadership and spokesperson representing Britain in Brussels and
Strasbourg. The EPLP leadership is
elected by all of its members twice during each five year parliamentary
term. Gary Titley MEP for the North
West is currently the leader of the EPLP.
